We live in amazing times. The new decade of the 21st Century stands in contrast to the inertia of a static order of unconscious existence now turning to look for the dynamics of life. The late Francis Crick, who discovered DNA, urged the focus of defining consciousness based upon neural mechanisms underlying awareness, denying the existence of a higher plan or Mind. Crick claimed that to understand consciousness, we have to ascertain where the cells responsible for determining consciousness are located. While the idea that consciousness may be clustered within either one or multiple areas of the brain may seem strange, this conjecture is being taken seriously by various scientists who are looking for the seat of consciousness.

On a more subtle level, a great physicist of the last century, Max Planck, encouraged our need to look for the individual mechanisms of energy instead of the whole, when he demonstrated that the energy emissions of the universe are not continuous but exist in packets of certain quantities — hence the name quanta. However, Roger Penrose and others now speak of “quantum consciousness” which by its very term would limit the unity or wholeness of consciousness, reducing it to a collective group of neurons. But in keeping with a larger holistic view of nature this same term has taken on new meaning where the mechanisms underlying quantum mechanical phenomena are taken as a whole and not as parts for the housing of consciousness.

To expand this theory even further we must investigate discussions by physicists, psychologists and spiritual thinkers who have arrived at what has been called the Quantum Mind. Burkhard Heim, a renowned German physicist, has been one of the pioneers of quantum physics and consciousness, connecting both physics and consciousness with a Universal Mind or God. He starts by explaining that consciousness works as a multi_level resonance field. Burkhard Heim lost his eyes and hands during the tragedy of World War II, but went on to become one of the greatest physicists, dictating pages and pages of mathematical theorems through the power of his mind to his devoted wife. In this issue, we share one of the early dialogues between Heim and this writer on the new physics.

With the expansiveness of “quantum consciousness” in mind we find ourselves participating in what could be called a “second coming” of science or the second coming of rediscovery. A new awareness of “Adamic humanity” is beginning to emerge with the latent powers of mind and supermind combined. In a world of vast changes and new discoveries, may we find the higher consciousness to experience the human and the Divine experience in the House of Many Mansions.
